from my parents, and most of all from my father, led me to think about ending of my life! This decision to put an end to my life, was not a cry for help for the people around me, by saying: I exist! It was more of a disappointment in life. It was, uh... I was disappointed in life, I was disappointed with the looks, I got from the people I loved and cared about, you know, I was under the impression than the only

possible alternative, was to free myself... of this materiality, meaning to die! The day when I wanted to do something about it, I had taken all the precautions needed so that they wouldn't find me and so that I can put an end to my life for good! So I took some pills. I was away from home for a while. I actually went into, into a cave,

in a small cave. It was somewhere unreachable, and that's where, actually, I was, I was found by the fire department! So, I was all set up and at that moment, a lady came in she even came to me. and told me, well, I don't recall exactly the words, but it was, it was something like : but no,

don't do that! I'm here now and so are you! Please, stop it! Stop it right now! But it was, it was too late because I've already swallowed the pills. She was a person rather, very much physical ... very real, very, very much human. She didn't have a halo, of some kind of light around her ... She didn't seem angelic or divine. But, uh..,

her appearance, her disappearance and the fact that I couldn't find her afterwards were particularly strange. But it wasn't ... I didn't identify her. as an angel, or as the Blessed Virgin, or whatever! It's one of the most unusual and strange episodes in my life! My second coming out I had to, because I go through altered states of consciousness: I have the ability, ever since I was a kid,

to get out of my body and thus to see places where my body is not present...! I can see my father in the garden building a wall when I, meanwhile, I'm in high school! I was able to see my grandmother, who was in a nursing home... at the time. I knew exactly what she'd eaten, while I was with some friends, doing something else! At first, I was.., I wanted to try and tell my parents,

my teacher, but it was, very, very complicated. Because they couldn't quite understand what I was saying. They were under the impression that these were just some musings, or that my thoughts were just all over the place. And even when I tried to explain that I was able to see, what was going on at my parents' house, while I was at school, by bringing in evidence, there was,

there was always some sort of denial. My parents and my relatives, even my fellow classmates... were denying that! So I decided to stay quiet about it, for a long time, until later, when I turned 18, around that time ! Both coming out were pretty close, because, although I had mentioned it when I was a kid, that ability to get out of my body, I had to bring it up again, as a young adult! And that was the second coming out,

that is to say, if, on the one hand, I'm already homosexual, and on the other hand, I experience exceptional and unnatural things! This second coming out has been easier form my loved ones, because they already had to go through the first one, which was, quite shocking, and so this second one, was somehow easier. It was so much easier to accept, that I actually teamed up afterwards, with a team of Swiss scientists,

to study, learn more about my abilities... to go through these out-of-body experiences, and objectify them, through a double-blind study design. The objectification of these experiences, allowed, my family and friends to accept it easily. And it's always easier, in my opinion, to have a son who is a bit far-fetched and who manages to make things we can explain, or we're trying to explain through science, rather than having a homosexual son!

Either way, I think that would've been the case for my parents. My mother, talks more easily, about these extraordinary abilities, rather than my homosexuality. I think it's a chance, too, for them, depending on whom they're with, with whom they're talking, they can either say, my son. has this weird ability to, come out of his body. Or alternatively, my son, as unusual as it sounds, is gay! For me it's been some kind of double identity, which helped me a lot, during my adolescence.

I think that this double identity helped my parents too! Yeah, maybe. it's more complicated! I don't know, you should ask them about it. I was unusual for two reasons and that was fine by me. It's not that I like to be strange and unusual, but I've gotten used to it. to be the weird gay! No, I never considered myself like a superhero, or like an X-Men! I was rather

lonely for a long time, a really long time! I've had to go through this double loneliness, because, because of being gay in the countryside, and because I experienced these things! So, I've been feeling lonely for a long time... I did find people... with whom to talk about my homosexuality, and others with whom to talk about my superpowers. But, uh.., it was hard to find people

with whom I can talk about all of it, or as a matter of fact, about me. Superman or Spider-Man are pretty lonely. Personally, I've never, even considered, these abilities as superpowers ! I've always thought of it, more like a facility, something that, that helps me in life, but not here to take control, influence anything or something like that...

For me, it's not really a superpower... it's rather more of an ability. I am absolutely certain that we all have it! We all have these abilities. I don't have anything... anything that the others don't have Maybe my only particularity, is having it a little easier than the others... Much more easier than the others ! These abilities, it may sound like fun! It's true, it's fun, on paper like this, it's really nice! But,

there really are big, hard hits. It happened to me. once, for instance, while going another "out-of-body" experience I found myself, in a very dark place, sinister, as if I were trapped in a small box, locked in a coffin. It felt like I'd been shriveled up, in something confined and very dark, very bleak! For about 15 days, every time I had to go through an out-of-body experience, I found myself in this place,

and it was very oppressive, and scary! For me, it's been very difficult to get away from it, and experience something else. And it's only then, when I realized that it was part of my mind, and a part of myself in the end, that created this thing, that I was able to free myself from it. These abilities are nice, but there's a downside to it. Sometimes there are things very difficult to live with. Capturing from the mind of someone else,

that's right in front of you, hypocrisy or things like that. Feeling the hypocrisy, anyone can do it, but actually capturing it and ...make it your own, it's something very confusing. So, um.., That's why for a long time, I had to carve out a shell for myself. For a long time, I've had to restrain all my emotions and I got

to create a beautiful shell and this shell has started to take shape, on the day that, I was really in love with someone ! Wherever I go, I can't... I can't always reconcile my abilities and my homosexuality but here at HappyGayTV, I'm fortunate enough to talk about both, so, during my life as a gay man,

these abilities have always been present: for example when I was younger, and I liked someone, it happened to me a few times.. not to be too intrusive, to be able to see him in his privacy. Laughters. So, this..., this could... this could be scary! It's not something I wanted, but, my emotion, my desire, were,

were so intense and profound, that I couldn't go against it. So... (Sighs) It happened to me several times! It could've actually been in the shower, or it could have been when they were ... asleep in bed, or, when it comes to a football player, in the locker room. Laughters A little later, when I lived with a man, an anecdote that is less pleasant,

is that I surprised him, just like that, by going through another "out-of-body" experience with another man, and it sure wasn't me ! And more recently with, the person I'm sharing my life with today, when I'm having a bad day and feeling the blues during the day at work, and I don't feel well, instinctively some part of me goes, to... to be with him. I can see him, in his work. He's a nurse too. I can see him, and then go back with a boost of energy, and warmth to my heart.

Since I've been experiencing this kind ...of phenomenon, since childhood, I'm constantly checking to see what I can see by "getting out of my body." This allows me to to make sure that I'm not crazy, that I'm no just confabulating, or just imagining things. That's why I joined, the Swiss research centre, on altered states of consciousness, because it helps me, too, to check and objectify what I'm going through.

During certain periods of my life, these abilities were so overwhelming, and I would have been very easy in my opinion to sink into madness. If I hadn't checked, if I didn't go through with this process, of checking each thing I was experiencing. For example, when I caught my ex-boyfriend with someone other than me, I was able to check afterwards,

by asking him questions, by getting it out of him, that indeed the thing had happened. I was able to confirm that, by talking to him, and we were wise enough, to tell each other things. And so, he very quickly confessed to me that he had indeed done so! He knew very well that I had this sort of ability. So, when I told him: I saw you with so-and-so, because I also knew the other person,

he couldn't deny it. It was, it was quite obvious. He knew very well, that I knew! It's always .. It's always good to say : Oh yeah, wow! It's true! I'm not completely crazy! I think it can be scary indeed, to live or be around a person like me, because it would feel like you're likely to lose a part of your freedom. But, uh.., what I always say to my loved ones,

or what I tell my friends, or my companions, or my current companion, is that, it's not because I have this ability, that I'm going to hold it against you and most of all, use it against you. It's my personal ethic. I say that to say, if he does something, outside of my field of vision, it means that he doesn't necessarily want me to know about it. If I find out, because of my abilities, It's my business!

And I don't have to feel offended, because of what he might have done. It's not easy to do so ! It's hard to come by this separation, between what we can see and what we can feel, you know, emotionally. I'm also fortunate enough to be able to put an end to the phenomenon when it's getting uncomfortable, meaning that if I think for example, of my best friend, or that my conscience is heading towards him, and I realize, it's for a fraction of a second, I realize that,

this is not a situation in which I should see him, the process just stops. I can't impinge on people's freedom. It's essential, because otherwise, I won't be able to live with anyone and I'll be all alone! Sylvie and Claude Charles, how important was the presence of a therapist to conduct these experiments? Personally, I find it a bit surprising! I imagined a laboratory, with scientists in white coat, with test tubes in hand, and a lot of highly sophisticated electronic devices, and carrying out countless measurements... Something like : " The Experts of Geneva"! Instead of all this,

just the presence of a therapist by your side, Sylvie, in the person of Claude Charles. It's quite disconcerting, but perhaps also a must...? We always forget that, when it comes down to the scientific side of things, when dealing with human beings. And that's where often there might be a little situation, because, when people experience some of these... these phenomenons, when they are confronted,

in fact with the idea of being subject of a scientific study, quite often, they can lose their abilities. That's what makes us special, compared to other teams, because there are others researches that are being conducted or have been conducted on these "out-of-body" experiences, but did not go that far ! This is not a phenomenon that we can actually go through, you know, as one would ask an athlete to run a 100 meters,

Claude Charles, as you mention in your book, how come that Nicolas, after revealing his homosexuality to you, has paradoxically led to some progress in your research ? For Nicolas, it was hard for him at first,

to reveal, among other things, to us, his homosexuality! It was a moment, rather extremely important, since he trusted us and was courageous enough to do that, and that's something that allowed him later on, to be able to talk, easily about his phenomena and the abilities he could experience...! As if clearing things up all the way to the end, gave him more strength to express everything, and go even deeper...!

Claude Charles, since we are on HappyGayTV, don't you feel that the message, you've just delivered to us, is very essential...? Isn't it a call from you, to all gays watching us, to fully accept who they are, and whether or not they do go through these out-of-body experiences, if I may say so. Certainly, the more people are going to accept

who they are, the more confident they will be and the more their lives are going to feel a lot more, I'd say, "easy." that's not the word, but more true, more complete! We have proof... with Nicolas, that, it's more than important! It's essential! Claude Charles, I don't know if you can conclude to a diagnosis as a therapist,

but after reading your book on Nicolas, the first question that one might ask : Could Nicolas be suffering, simply, of mental disorders and more especially schizophrenia? Because, at some point in the course of your experiments, he starts to hear voices, music, and even songs that he doesn't know about ! Well, at the Institute, we see

so many witnesses, who go through these, phenomena, somewhat similar, or may be different, too. We can definitely tell as of now, someone who's actually suffering a pathology, from someone who goes through some quite real phenomena. Sylvie, you explained in this book, that Nicolas goes through these out-of-body experiences and our report also shows this, but has it been proven scientifically that it

is indeed just a phenomenon...? We use this expression, of "out-of-body," because we don't know much of it yet, and because people, indeed, experience this phenomenon just like they would get out of their bodies. And with all of our resources... as of right now, we still haven't been able to prove that there's something that came out of the body and is moving...! We need to be clear about this!

This matter is still pending. although in some cases, it really feels like there's something, that is about to come out. But here's the thing, we couldn't objectify it, as of right now. However, it would seem that what Nicolas is going through may have some similarities, with the experience that people go through what we do call,

a near-death experience, NDE. What are your thoughts on this, Sylvie ? By nature, it's the same type of experience. For example, in the "Near Death Experience (NDE), people often say they can see 360 degrees, and are able to zoom in one, one particular detail, or being able to get into matter... These are things that are sometimes also reported, in the "out-of-body" experiences occurring without near death.

So for me, it's really, it's a phenomenon, of the same kind. It's a phenomenon related to ... It's an altered state of consciousness, that goes the distance, is a little bit different, and is stained by circumstances. Sylvie, by putting the electrodes on the human brain, some researchers have managed to highlight, something similar, maybe even identical. The people who took part in these experiments, claim to feel like the got out of

their bodies, too! It's by the way the argument of those who claim, that there would be nothing after death! What do you have to say to them? By electrically stimulating certain areas of the brain, especially in the angular gyrus located in the right temporal lobe, some people have reported having the feeling of getting out of their bodies.

There's actually one case that's extremely well-known, which was described by the Doctor Blanquet. In this case, what was quite interesting, is that, what the person described has nothing in common with what Nicolas is describing. She's described that, that she was above her body, but she could only see her legs she couldn't see, her entire body, which is something never described

in a spontaneous "out-of-body" experience. People, still see their bodies, if it's the case. But the body is seen as it is, just like in real life. She, Well, she could only see the legs, she couldn't see what was going on around her. In other words, everything was blurry. Which is also very different from a spontaneous "out-of-body" experience, where generally, you experience high acuity in vision, which wasn't the case this time.

And then the third point, that's really important, but that's not being said, in the articles, that I knew from discussing with the researchers, is that if someone closed his eyes, the phenomenon no longer continued.
