The Paris Pride March: The end of the word "gay"?
The Paris Pride March (La Marche des Fiertés), formerly known as Gay Pride, raises serious questions about the very essence of the LGBTQIA+ community. Marco Drion, creator of HappyGayTV, wonders if the term "gay" still has a meaning and if it is still representative of this diversity. On his way to the Paris Pride March in 2022, he was struck by the virtual disappearance of the word "gay" in favor of other, perhaps more politically correct, terminologies. In a world where identities are fragmenting, what is the role of the word "gay" and who can really identify with it?
First of all, whatever their opinion, the HappyGayTV team would like to thank all the contributors to this micro-sidewalk who crossed our path during the Paris Pride March 2023, because it is important that everyone can express his opinion. A change of name, an identity in question
Gay Pride, once a symbol of pride and unity, has been pushed into the background by a politically correct Pride March. Marco Drion then wonders if the term "gay" has been ousted from the event for reasons of inclusion or if this testifies to a loss of identity. Indeed, HappyGayTV takes its name from the Stonewall riots, where the word "gay" originally meant "Good as You". But who still remembers this meaning today?
A controversial investigation
Determined to find answers, Marco Drion launches into a controversial investigation during the Pride March of 2022. His microphone in hand, he questions the participants on the current meaning of the word "gay" and what it means to them. . The answers are diverse and often contradictory, perhaps reflecting the fragmentation of the LGBTQIA+ community. Some feel excluded or ignored by this word, while others see it, on the contrary, as a celebration of growing diversity and the emergence of new identities.
The loss of the essence of the community
Beyond the simple change in terminology, Marco Drion wonders if the loss of the word "gay" does not mean the loss of the very essence of the LGBTQIA+ community. As more and more terms emerge to describe different sexual identities and orientations, the word "gay" seems to be diluted in a sea of acronyms and labels. What does this word mean to those who still use it, and is it still representative of the historic struggle for LGBTQIA+ rights?
Rethinking identity and inclusion
Marco Drion's investigation raises key questions about identity and inclusion within the LGBTQIA+ community. Is it time to rethink the terms used to reflect the growing diversity? Perhaps there is a need to strike a balance between inclusiveness and preserving the history and essence of the community. The debate is on, and it's time to rethink our understanding of what it means to be "gay" in an ever-changing world.
To conclude, the Paris Pride March and the evolution of the term "gay" raise deep questions within the LGBTQIA+ community. As identities fragment and new terminologies emerge, it is crucial to ask what the true meaning of the word “gay” is and if it is still representative of the historic struggle for rights and recognition. Has HappyGayTV, which wants to be a channel that brings the community together, finally chosen its name well, or is it already obsolete, not to say politically incorrect? It is time to rethink our understanding of identity and inclusion within the LGBTQIA+ community, to preserve the essence of this struggle while celebrating growing diversity.

Hello my little ones, good morning to you all. Where are gay people? That's exactly the thought I had when I went to the Paris Pride march, i.e. the Gay Pride in the French capital. Actually, to be more accurate, it struck me that the word "gay" had almost mysteriously disappeared from this event.
First thing, this event is no longer called Gay Pride, but the Marche des Fiertés. And what's even more surprising, I came across terms I'd never noticed before, and which I haven't fully grasped the meaning as we speak. It's as if this parade were fragmented into so many subramification compartments, that a gay man himself, like me, for example, wouldn't understand it.
To explain exactly what I'm talking about, I'll ask you this question: Are you familiar with queer deter? Or racialized queers? Or the handy-mix? For me, not really. And so, I asked myself if this parade still made sense to me, and if I could still identify with this march.
Not quite sure. Yet, a few years ago, when I had the idea of creating this channel, the one you're watching today, a name appeared to me in an obvious way, HappyGayTV Why is that? Simply because Gay Pride originated in the riots that took place on June 27, 1969 Stonewall bar in New York City,
in Manhattan, more specifically in Greenwich Village. A trans woman named Sylvia Riviera came out of this bar and shouted to the police officers who came to inspect and arrest them: "We all are gay". We all are gay! There were : bis, trans, homosexuals, women, men
and all these people at that time easily related to this word. And it's referring to this event, to this word that historically represented LGBT people, that I decided to name this channel: "HappyGayTV". As a matter of fact, comparatively, "Happy LGBTQI TV" is definitely much less sexy than HappyGayTV, especially for a channel dedicated to sexual orientation.
But on a more serious note, I was really shocked when I contacted some associations in Paris, France, it was made clear to me that HappyGayTV, because of its name, was by definition for them, a channel exclusively devoted for homosexual men and that lesbians and trans would certainly not recognize themselves in it. Not sure either. So, I went to investigate in Paris during the Marche des Fiertés 2022
and I asked this question to anyone who happened to cross my path. Does the word "gay" still mean something today? and what does it mean to you? And here are their answers. Cue story. Well, for me, the word "gay" stands for a mix of everyone ultimately. Be it lesbian, gay men,
trans. Maybe overseas, "gay" means other things, But in France I think it's very much linked to "gay homme cis" and especially includes, I mean, takes up a lot of room in the LGBT. I think especially now, we need to open up this "G" to other letters.
I think it's intended a bit more for men. Well, no really intended, it's a bit more for men. In its social sense, it's not just a word
with a "Y", at least, it's not the word I feel attached to, no, not particularly. Do we really need the word "gay"? Isn't the word "homosexual" enough? Do we need, once again, to check boxes? We can't ... If we're talking about love again! It became the Pride March because the word "gay" is related to a sectional struggle in the LGBTQIA+ community.
For example, in the case of the Pride march, I would personally go with "Pride march"... instead not "March of ... since "Pride March", actually, kind of breaks up the struggles and here we're dealing with something more global. The word " gay " is ... I define myself as a "gay person". and I think it's more of an identity rather than a huge claim and take the weight
on all gender identities and all struggles that we have today, for example at the Paris Pride march. For me, the word "gay", if you really pause in very locked mode, is all about homosexuality and everything it entitles. But for now, I think at the moment, it's much more open in the sense that, well, be it homosexuals, transsexuality,
non-binarity, all that. I think we have to remember that in 1973, when women went out on the street, after Stonewall, in the street, these women were trans, racialized, and that they remained often invisible in the struggle. But the first to walk,
were transwomen, most of the time. The Pride, particularly the Paris Pride, for example, the "g" in LGBT is often highlighted, whereas I think there's much more diversity. And maybe we need some rethinking of categories to make room for other queer people who also need representation. That's why, for me, the important thing, is to call it Pride and not Gay Pride.
And maybe reconsider politicizing it more than marching behind commercial floats, etc. It's still a march which must be political, and in which there are rights to claim, from all the discrimination we suffer. One must not forget that It certainly is a party, but for me, it's mostly a political march. HappyGayTV, is for gay people,
lesbians, for every person, I'd say, who is different from heterosexuals. I think that in fact, truth be told I wouldn't feel represented by the title. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't go and watch the videos, but the title, for now, politically, might get me into a bit of a problem.
There you go, my little ones, if you liked this video, please share it with as many people as possible, wherever you can, on social media, via SMS, email or airdrop. As you probably know, it's now up to you to step in and give me your opinion on this topic. I'll be waiting to read your reactions on the Hot-Line, you know, that great service we've created
especially for you on HappyGayTV.com, and allows you to be part of our shows just by sending us a message, or a video so you can comment on what you're watching. It's a kind of after-sales service, basically. but not just that. Now, I ask you this question: Does the word "Gay" still mean anything to you today? And if so, what exactly does it mean and why?
Personally, and contrary to what I've seen elsewhere, it seems that in France and Paris in particular, this word now refers to homosexual men exclusively, or should I say : homosexual cis-gender men! But is this really the case? Did I do the right thing in naming HappyGayTV this way, in memory of Stonewall? What do you think about that, you guys not living in the Paris area, or perhaps even abroad? That's all, thank you for interacting with us
