Paris Gay Pride 2023: A less festive, but more eco-responsible atmosphere?

A Paris Gay Pride, also known as the Marche des Fiertés (Pride March), has been the center of much controversy this year. Due to environmental concerns, authorities have imposed drastic restrictions, banning thermal tanks, and imposing sound systems. These measures elicited mixed reactions among participants and certainly gave Paris Gay Pride a less festive atmosphere than usual. Check out the video above, featuring a vox pop from the event, where people voice their opinions on these restrictions.

The less festive side of Paris Gay Pride 2023

To mark 10 years since the enactment of the marriage for all law in France, which paved the way for same-sex marriage, Paris Gay Pride was expected to be a memorable celebration. However, the restrictions imposed deprived the event of some iconic elements. Thermal floats, which were often accompanied by dancers in extravagant costumes, were almost absent. Additionally, towering sound systems that played upbeat music were restricted. These changes have undeniably contributed to a less festive and lively atmosphere.

Mixed reactions

The micro-sidewalk carried out during the Gay Pride in Paris made it possible to collect the various opinions of the participants. Some have strongly criticized the restrictions, saying they distorted the event and called into question the authenticity of the pride parade. They see it as an attempt to attack the LGBT community by depriving Gay Pride of its festive and demanding dimension, but also for lack of strong images, less media impact.

Some attendees believe the party is inseparable from Gay Pride and do not plan to return next year if restrictions persist. Others, aware of environmental issues, support the measures taken and call for broader reflection on the impact of festive events on the ecosystem.

Still others, mainly among the youngest, have taken these restrictions as a "symbolic" measure to raise awareness of the ecological emergency. They believe that priority should be given to preserving the environment, even at the expense of the party. Can we say that they are in favor of a “punitive” ecology?

Whatever your point of view, if you have never been to a gay Pride and if like some of our interlocutors, you do not see how the party can be altered with the presence or not of floats, we therefore suggest to watch now this magnificent video that we made on the occasion of the Gay Pride of Mas Palomas in the Canary Islands.

Discussion within the LGBT community

As Marco recommends in this video, you are invited to continue the debate by sharing your comments via internal messaging, the Hot-Line. Paris Gay Pride 2022, a premonitory vision?

In this video Marco also refers to the video of the micro-sidewalk of Gay Pride in Paris in 2022, where we were already surprised by the decrease in the visibility of the word "Gay" in the event. The reflection focuses on the very meaning of "Gay Pride", pointing out that the word "Gay" also means "joyful" in French. This reference suggests an early tendency to question the festive and joyful nature of Gay Pride, in connection with societal and environmental changes. A premonitory vision?

Hello my little ones ! Hello to you all! Back in the early days in Paris it was called the Gaypride. Then we abandoned this designation and became la Marche des Fiertés, not including the word gay which is also synonym of joy and celebration. Today in 2023, thermal floats are prohibited, dancers, dressed in original and festive costumes,

have almost disappeared. Eventually, did we or didn't we, as we go along, voluntarily or involuntarily, tried to ruin Paris Gay Pride, by taking away little by little, its festive side, whereas in this year 2023, it was more than ever the perfect opportunity in Paris, for an unforgettable event, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the law on marriage for all, authorizing individuals of the same sex

to get married in France. So we went to investigate, with microphone and camera in hand, at the Paris 2023 Gay Pride, and here are the answers from everyone who came across our route. Check it out! I think there's a lot more pollutants today than, once a year, a few floats on parade for a good cause, too! And that's it!

We don't stop planes every day, planes do come and go, every day, there are take-offs, and you don't start a controversy for that! What a shame! A real shame, It's losing its charm ! It's a package. It's not, it's not just one thing, it's a movement, it's a package, that's what it is... Yes, it's totally different. Yes, absolutely, yes!

So, I'll be honest, the first time, it's the first time I'm taking part on the gay,... pride in fact! Well, for me anyway, I find it incredible. There's a lot of people smiling everywhere, it's amazing. Actually, the fact that there are no floats, well, it leaves me neither hot nor cold ! I think it's cool enough that there's a parade, so that's super fun! And for me it's super festive,

people are smiling everywhere, it's just too good, everyone's happy! So for me, it's still truly a great event.

The fact that floats aren't eco-friendly, I totally agree! Because we live in an era where you really have to be aware of what's happening. And literally the..., the ecology, it has to become a collective consciousness

and we have to be unanimous about it. I know some friends who have invested in electric floats, so we still have floats, but they're eco-friendly!

So I don't think they're not letting them march. We're running a parade that's different from other years. That's right, maybe it won't be as interesting as it used to be, but we'll see in a few minutes. But, but, but that's good. Either way, it's 2023, we're talking ecology and it's a good thing too that we adapt. I don't think this is ruining

the parade somehow, and it's still an extremely joyful parade and we're going to make some noise to cover up for the floats. There was some talk about the Gay Pride this year, because of the fact that we banned floats for ecological reasons. It's pure hypocrisy, absolute hypocrisy. Everything's fucked up and this is intentional. Simple as that.

It's true that having floats was a real asset in terms of atmosphere. It also allowed us to shed light on certain people with intersting costumes, to share what they wanted, how can I put this, to promote in terms of speech. The fact that there are none this year, also makes it clear that the point is to be part of the ecological movement and to be able to be actively involved.

However, it's true that it's regrettable, because it's going to affect the atmosphere. So, I'm torn between the fact that it might come on, the fact that it will be less engaging, but it's still Gay Pride, and the fact that we're fully involved in the ecological movement too.

It's true that I had heard about it. On the one hand, I really do wonder if it could have a slightly less festive touch. And can't it make the event somehow invisible ? But on the other hand, a pride remains a Pride ! The most important thing, is not so much the floats, it's the people, it's the party, it's more about .. the overall atmosphere, all the music! The floats, are a plus, to the extent that,

we are faced with more and more ecological needs, I think it's great to adapt to this, and that we're changing the way we do things, even if it's true that, in a way, it can take away the usual visibility we have. Well, this is my first pride in Paris this year. I'm very happy to be here. And certainly the presence of floats doesn't mean we're not here, quite the opposite, always growing in numbers, more demanding.

It's very important that it goes on, by any means necessary. Ecology is as important as our LGBT rights.

I've attended the Gay Pride for many years and certainly, it's quite a shame, because it's really going to take away, I'd say, the festive spirit of Paris Gay Pride. Particularly as it's one of the few Gay Pride events, where you can actually march behind the floats, with the music. And if it's over, I don't know if I'll keep coming to the gay pride, for the upcoming years, if this ain't there !

I was actually looking forward to the festive spirit of the Gay Pride. Something is lost, maybe something a little bit more political or a little more... But there's not much, there's not much more, of that festive spirit it was known for before. With this thermal engine float ban. Do you think, like our last speaker, that something is actually lost at the Paris Gay Pride? According to you,

is this action totally justified or completely unreasonable? We're looking forward to all your answers now on our in-house messaging system, the Hot-Line where, as you know, you can drop us a message and it's free. Just so you know, every single comment is important. Your contribution can inspire, educate and create connections with other

members of our community and, most of all, contribute to the debate. Your message will then be broadcast, in the HappyGayTV Club and can also be broadcast, in one of our shows. Either way, it will be viewed by our followers. So go for it, get the ball rolling. Add your thoughts to this micro-trottoir. And before we leave each other, I also encourage you to watch the video of the Paris Gay Pride in 2022,

where there was already some concern that the word gay, was no longer at the forefront of the LGBT scene. A premonitory video? You tell us. The link to watch this micro-trottoir below this video on the HappyGayTV.com website. That's it, my little ones, see you soon for new adventures and take good care of yourself! Ciao, Ciao!
