Chemsex Took the Love of His Life: Why Jean-Luc Romero Chose to Speak Out

In This Episode:

In this powerful episode of HappyGayTV, French activist Jean-Luc Romero and addiction specialist Fred Bladou explore one of the most misunderstood issues affecting parts of the LGBTQ+ community today: chemsex.

In this conversation, you'll discover:

  • The personal tragedy that led Jean-Luc Romero to become an advocate for chemsex awareness and prevention.
  • Why some people are drawn to chemsex in the first place.
  • The emotional and psychological factors that often remain hidden behind substance use.
  • The real risks associated with chemsex, including addiction and overdose.
  • Why many experts believe prevention and harm reduction strategies need to evolve.

A deeply human conversation about love, loss, resilience and the importance of honest dialogue.

What happens when a search for connection, pleasure or escape turns into tragedy?

For French activist Jean-Luc Romero, that question became deeply personal when he lost his husband, Christophe Michel, after a chemsex session.

Today, years later, he has chosen to speak openly about grief, prevention and the urgent need for better awareness around chemsex.

Joining him in this episode is Fred Bladou, a sex therapist, addiction specialist and harm reduction advocate whose work focuses on sexual health, substance use and LGBTQ+ wellbeing.

Together, they explore a subject that is often discussed in whispers, misunderstood by the public and surrounded by stigma.

This is not a conversation about judgment.

It is a conversation about understanding.

And perhaps, about saving lives.

If this episode resonates with you, know that the conversation does not end here.

When Chemsex Becomes Personal

On May 29, 2018, Jean-Luc Romero's life changed forever.

His husband, Christophe Michel, died during a chemsex session.

He was only 31 years old.

For many people, stories about chemsex are reduced to statistics, headlines or public health reports.

But behind every statistic is a human being.

A family.

A partner.

A story.

During this interview, Jean-Luc Romero shares not only the pain of loss but also the difficult questions that remain unanswered.

The uncertainty.

The guilt.

The search for meaning after an unimaginable tragedy.

"I didn't have a choice. Either I kept going, or I collapsed."

— Jean-Luc Romero

It is a simple sentence.

Yet it captures the resilience that would eventually transform personal grief into public action.

What Is Chemsex?

Chemsex refers to the intentional use of psychoactive substances before or during sex in order to enhance, prolong or intensify the experience.

For some people, it may involve a search for pleasure, freedom, connection or confidence.

For others, it may become something much more complicated.

Understanding chemsex requires moving beyond stereotypes.

People who engage in chemsex do not all share the same motivations, experiences or challenges.

This complexity is one of the reasons why simplistic approaches rarely work.

And it is precisely why conversations like this one matter.

Why Do People Engage in Chemsex?

One of the most insightful moments of this episode comes when Fred Bladou addresses a question many people ask:

Why would someone choose chemsex in the first place?

The answer, he explains, is rarely as simple as outsiders imagine.

Pleasure is often part of the equation.

So is curiosity.

So is the desire to feel more confident, more connected or more liberated.

But there can also be deeper factors.

Experiences of rejection.

Internalized stigma.

Loneliness.

Trauma.

Mental health struggles.

The need to temporarily silence emotional pain.

"Chemsex can become a form of self-medication, unfortunately a dangerous one."

— Fred Bladou

That observation challenges many common assumptions.

It reminds us that behind risky behaviours there are often human stories that deserve understanding rather than condemnation.

The Hidden Risks of Chemsex

While people may initially engage in chemsex for positive reasons, the risks can be significant.

Physical Risks

Chemsex can increase the likelihood of:

  • Overdose
  • Cardiovascular complications
  • Respiratory problems
  • Severe dehydration
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Dangerous drug interactions

According to Fred Bladou, extended sessions involving stimulant drugs can place enormous stress on the body.

Particularly when substances are mixed.

Mental Health Risks

The psychological consequences can be equally serious.

Some individuals report:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Isolation
  • Loss of self-esteem
  • Dependency on substances to experience intimacy

The emotional impact can sometimes remain long after the drugs themselves have left the body.

Addiction and Dependency

One of the most important points raised during the discussion concerns addiction.

Certain substances used in chemsex can trigger intense cravings and rapid patterns of dependency.

This does not happen to everyone.

But it happens often enough to be a serious concern.

Understanding these risks is not about fear-mongering.

It is about making informed decisions and recognizing warning signs before situations become dangerous.

Why Prevention Matters

Throughout the episode, both guests return to a central theme:

prevention.

Not shame.

Not stigma.

Prevention.

Jean-Luc Romero explains how the circumstances surrounding Christophe's death convinced him that more education and awareness are urgently needed.

Fred Bladou argues that effective prevention must include honest conversations about sexuality, pleasure, mental health and substance use.

Ignoring these realities does not make them disappear.

Talking about them openly may help reduce harm and save lives.

Jean-Luc Romero's Story of Loss and Resilience

For audiences outside France, Jean-Luc Romero may not be a familiar name.

But his life has been marked by decades of advocacy.

He has spent years campaigning for HIV awareness, human rights and public health issues.

After Christophe's death, he added another mission to that list: helping raise awareness about chemsex.

Yet what makes this interview remarkable is not politics.

It is humanity.

The love he describes.

The grief he carries.

And the determination to ensure that Christophe is remembered for much more than the circumstances of his death.

"I don't want Christophe's life to be reduced to the way it ended."

— Jean-Luc Romero

It is perhaps the most moving moment of the entire conversation.

Because it reminds us that every life is bigger than its final chapter.

A Conversation Without Judgment

At HappyGayTV, our goal is not to tell people what to think.

It is to create space for meaningful conversations.

Chemsex is a difficult topic.

A sensitive topic.

And often an emotional one.

That is why this episode avoids simplistic answers.

Instead, it offers something more valuable:

understanding.

Understanding of the people involved.

Understanding of the risks.

Understanding of the reasons why some individuals may find themselves vulnerable.

And understanding of how prevention can become more effective.

Why You Should Watch This Episode

Because this is not only a conversation about chemsex.
