Just a question of love and dating sites
"Love, love, love", (L'amour, l'amour, l'amour) as Mouloudji sang, resonates in our hearts. For many, finding love is the ultimate secret to happiness, whether you're gay or straight. However, the search for love and the obstacles to finding our soul mate are often a reality shared by many people. LGBT individuals, on top of that, face additional challenges related to their sexual orientation or gender identity.
In this special edition of HappyGayTV & You(4), we will explore the theme of love from different angles, based on the many messages (audio or video) that followers have left on our Hot-Line, HappyGayTV's internal messaging system.
First of all, we will talk about a TV movie that made an impression when it was released in the early 2000s and which some still remember, more than 20 years later: "Just a question of love". Next, we'll discuss the implications of dating apps for our love life and how they can sometimes compromise our quest for true love. Another message we received on our servers will allow us to explore Richard Mèmeteau's book: "Sex Friends, how to miss your love life in the digital age".
Since we're talking about dating apps, let's get acquainted with the different "tribes" present in the gay community. Do you know the "Otters", the "Bears" or the "Minets", for example? But in the end, aren't all these criteria simply superfluous? Shouldn't we consider that true love transcends appearances?
Speaking of the "Bears", we also received a wonderful video from Jean-Jacques, owner of the gay guesthouse "La Patte d'Ours". To book, click here!
Just a Question of Love: The TV Movie
Broadcast in prime time on France 2, one of the main French public service channels, on January 26, 2000, the TV movie "Just a question of love" aroused great enthusiasm within the LGBT community.
It was one of the few, if not the first time, that such an openly discussed subject, with unequivocal scenes, was shown at prime time on a major French television channel.
More than 20 years after its broadcast, this TV movie remains etched in the memories of many gay people. A HappyGayTV follower also wanted to tell us about it using our Hot-Line, our internal messaging service, leaving a nice video.
Marco, could not remain indifferent to this message, because "Just a question of love" also played a decisive role in his life. As he explains in this video, if this TV movie had not existed, he does not know if he would have created and launched HappyGayTV.
This film came at just the right time for many people, partly explaining its success. Indeed, only two months earlier, on November 15, 1999, the PACS (civil pact of solidarity) had been promulgated, allowing gays to have their union officially recognized and to protect their rights.
After this event, a boost was needed to change mentalities in French society, especially after the heated debates in the National Assembly during the vote on the law!
What could be better than showing the whole population that the difference between a heterosexual couple and a homosexual couple is not that great? What if it only depended on love?
A TV movie was ideal to demonstrate this. "Just a question of love" has certainly changed certain mentalities, especially within families where religious values are strong. It not only addresses the love story between Laurent (Cyrille Thouvenin) and Cédric (Stéphane Guérin Tillié), but also the exclusion of gays from their own families and the persistent prejudices against the LGBT community.
Faced with this success, "Just a question of love" was released on DVD a few months later, with the subtitle: "Do we really love our children as much as we claim?". The DVD was similarly successful to its original release, prompting numerous book signings.
Marco remembers having attended one of them, at the gay bookstore "Les mots à la Bouche", located at the time in the heart of the Parisian Marais, at that time. That day, many people came to meet director Christian Faure, screenwriter Pierre Pauquet and actor Stephan Guérin Tillié. The DVDs then sold like hotcakes!
If you want to watch it, you can still find it on DVD, in a second-hand version, on the FNAC website or on Amazon, in different formats (English, zone 1 and 2; German, zone 2)
But, good news, even simpler, it is currently available for legal and free streaming by clicking on this link.
Watch it, it really is a must-see gay TV movie!
Great love and dating site: impossible mission?
According to Richard Mèmeteau, author of the book Sex friends, comment to miss his love life, in the digital age” published by “Zone” or “La Découverte”, (pocket format), dating applications, which were created in the purpose of promoting romantic encounters, would in fact be tools that would ultimately contribute to scuttle our love life.
Indeed, the abundant and permanent supply of potential partners, as well as the selection criteria so precise, to refine our search, would no longer allow us to find, in the digital age, true love. We would now have to resolve to consider that the exception in love would no longer be appropriate and that we would now all be doomed to meet multiple partners, certainly of quality, but without building a lasting life with one of them. .
Again, shouldn't we leave aside all these objective criteria, put our cerebral side on standby, and simply let our heart speak by going there by feeling?
Finally, wouldn't all this be** just a question of love**, far from our so-called objective criteria for selecting the ideal partner?
Loves, Bears and company!
Whether looking for true love or a one-night stand, are you familiar with the terms used by some on dating apps to select the physical criteria of the ideal partner?
For example, do you know the difference between "Otters", "Twinks", "Chubs", "Bears" and "Pups"?
And above all, do you ever use these selection criteria to refine your choice of the ideal partner on dating apps?
Watch this video until the end, we explain everything in pictures!

Hello my little ones. Hello to all! This week, you have been amazing, very impressive! I don't know what you took, but you took it! And I am quite amazed! Congratulations and thank you very much. an extraordinary tool! A tool that will surpass all our expectations, and that will do good, to all those who are watching us. Again, thank you to all of you from the bottom of my heart! And you will understand soon the joy and the excitement that I am feeling today, while watching this episode until the end. Don't miss out on anything, it's quite interesting! Coming up next is a video that will bring joy to your life.
JJ from la Patte d'our (Bear's Paw), I love your video. And I can't refrain from sharing it again and again. It's brief, it's great and it's so funny!
As a thank you, JJ, I would like to point out to all those who don't know it, that the Patte d'Ours is a gay guesthouse, which is located not far from Sancerre, France, in the Cher department. It's about 2 hours, south of Paris, driving. French wine lovers know very well where it is! And what I also wanted to say to all those who are watching us, is that the aquatic facilities
in this gay guesthouse, are as great as that of the kindness of Jean-François and Jean-Jacques who run this, beautiful place ! Hello to all, my name is Thomas, I'm 39 years old, I live in Charleville-Mézières, in the Ardennes and I wanted to talk to you today about a movie that meant a lot to me. This movie is : "Juste une question d'amour". (Just a question of love)
A movie that is quite special, as it was the first movie, actually, dealing with homosexuality, and which was aired on a prime time channel, namely France 2, in prime time. And it's a movie that mattered a lot because it came at the right time to speak about something I was experiencing and that I didn't quite understand at the time. So, I urge you to watch this movie.
In fact, I'll always remember everything about the circumstances in which I watched it. I also remembered the next morning, going to school and asking my friends if they had watched the movie and what they thought about it. I invite you to watch it because Cyril Thouvenin, was just splendid taking the role of the gay man who is trying to find himself. And then, Eva Darlan, playing the mother
was also amazing ! This movie brought a lot of things, that showed me that I could also live a beautiful story, make beautiful encounters and find the love of a lifetime. A movie that helped me a lot to project myself, and see what the future holds for me. And so again, I invite you all to take the time and watch this movie. Unfortunately, today,
it is not available on streaming platforms but maybe you can find it, at a library, or through a gay association near your home. They probably have a copy on DVD. There you go, I send you big kisses. And I'll see you soon on a new HappyGayTV episode. Bye! Thomas, I loved your hotline, it's awesome. Brilliant idea, the fact that you showed us
using your tablet, the cover of the DVD, it's like a pro! Maybe we'll hire you, quite actually! And it's very interesting that you told us about this TV movie, that caused a lot of stir at that time, when it was aired on France 2, If I remember correctly, it was on January 26, 2000, in prime time, at 20:50. In fact, this movie caused quite a buzz, because it did a lot of good, to a lot of people
from the LGBT community. I even believe, that this movie is, and will remain a must-see in the French-speaking gay culture, notably thanks to this memorable line of Carole saying to Laurent, on a parking lot : "Il est pédé comme un sac à dos"! (He's gay as a window) I even wonder, if we could still nowadays say something in a movie, without causing an outcry,
a polemic! So, if I understood correctly, Thomas, you were a teenager at the time, and that movie helped you put words to the emotions that you felt towards other boys and then talk about it around you. Which is huge! And what you don't know, is that this movie also mattered a lot for me at that time. It also allowed me like you, to project myself into the future,
at a time when I was really going through a rough time. And it's quite surprising the fact that you're telling us about it right at the start of HappyGayTV. That's a bit, like a hint of fate. Let me explain: at that time, in April 99, I was running away from a toxic relationship within 24 hours, because I didn't feel safe at home... So I moved in the span of one
working day, that is to say in 8 hours ! And there I was, alone with my little cat, my little Mona. And I can tell you that these years have not been easy for me at all, because when you come out of a relationship like that, you don't believe in anything anymore, no more love. You try to survive and that's all! Anyway, this movie helped me believe again that love between
boys is possible. So I hung on to this story as if it were a crutch to move forward, and keep going. And I'm confident that without this movie, produced by Christian Faure, my life would not have evolved in the the same way. Indeed, a few months later, maybe thanks to all my positive thoughts after rewatching the movie several times,
mostly during blue evenings, it allowed me to put myself, psychologically, in a good mood, in a good state of mind, to meet my companion, in August of that same year. And so, that night, when I was not expecting it at all, I met a lovely boy, who is still by my side till today and who was and is is still of great help in the process of HappyGayTV's implementation.
Without him, I don't think I would be much of anything today. And so, the question I've always asked myself is this one: Without this movie, would I have met him, or would I have remained bitter and hurt for the rest of my life? Would I have taken, in fact, the same path. Would HappyGayTV have existed? No one knows! That's why, I invite everyone who has not yet yet watched this movie,
to go and watch it soon. FYI, I should point out that it was released a few months later on DVD in France. And for the English speakers who are watching us, I would like to add that there is also a DVD version for the USA, and another one subtitled in English for Europe. I even found out that, there is also, a version with subtitles in German, if someone would be interested, who knows!
And if you ever can't find it, in addition to the solutions that Thomas told us to watch the movie, you should know that it is also in free access, i. e. in legal streaming and free, by clicking on the link in the article, below the video, on our website HappyGayTV.com. Thank you Thomas! Hello HappyGayTV friends, I hope you are well. I actually wanted,
to share my favorite book of the moment. So it's entitled: "Sex Friends, how to mess up your love life in the digital age" ? A book by Richard Mèmeteau, both a philosopher and a professor of philosophy, but also a bit of a sociologist and himself gay. And he talks about a lot of interesting things about the disillusionment that you can get from it, the trouble of finding the soul mate, and also, in the rather, I would say current practices,
recurring booty calls. It's particularly quite interesting, as it shows in fact, that with dating websites, it is quite difficult to find your soul mate. But that does not prevent from meeting good people, and that we should probably consider the end of the love exception. There you go, hugs and kisses, and see you soon! Big kisses. Ciao, ciao.
Thank you Chris 92 ! Very active on the Hot-Line, by the way! Just like Patoche, I see that you are turning into a big supporter of this channel, and we are very happy about that. Plus, with quality messages, like we expect. So congratulations! Didn't I tell you, that this would be an exceptional show?
And it's not over yet! Anyway Chris 92, thank you for sharing this book with us that I didn't know about, and that I didn't have the opportunity to read before recording this episode. And again, if I understood correctly your message, you also talk about love... But mostly, of the trouble to find someone, in this digital age,
even with all the dating applications that exist today, which would seem to be quite a paradox! And it's true that since 2000 and the release of the movie : "Just a matter of love", things have changed a lot. So, Chris 92, it sounds like you're saying, if I understand correctly, that monogamy and true love among gays would not exist nowadays, and it seems that that we would be as of now all destined,
to live alone with many "sex friends, who would somehow, in some way, add a little bit of fun from time to time our daily life. And who knows, judging from the title of the book, it would be the surest way, to fail in your love life. Kind of like, too many offers of love would tend to wear out your luck to find the true love, as well as perhaps, too many criteria in our selection filters of the ideal partner,
would also, naturally exclude, specifically true love. That said, not to be pessimistic, does true love really exist among gays? And even among straight people for that matter? I think when it comes to love, we all don't have the same aspirations. And it's true that gays, have always been, more or less fickle, right? Because, long before these applications,
there were still a lot of places, even today, where you can spend a nice evening having fun with a few one-night stands and and also with some clear ideas of selection criteria for these same lovers. So, I think that again, according to the author's idea, this could already be, you know, in the same way as dating applications as well as opportunities, to fail in your love life. Well, anyway...
So in the end, maybe it has always existed, but on a smaller scale, in fact! However, as I didn't have the time to read this book, I may be wrong, actually. It would be nice if we could talk about it again or invite its author Richard Mèmeteau. Why not, right ? That would be a great idea! And eventually.., besides this book, the question I've often asked myself about this
is the following: the fact that one stays or not, with someone, is it only related to the sexual dimension of the relationship? Or is there something else? And if so, what? What is it that makes us ask ourselves one day, when you're with a boy, what makes us want to stay, for a longer period of time? I would like to know your thoughts on the matter. And what about you girls? what do you think?
So get on your smartphones, your computers and share with me your thoughts on the Hot-Line whether in audio or video messages on HappyGayTV.com. And until then, let's all read this book, and we'll talk about it in another episode. Thank you again Chris 92.
Hi everyone! Back from from vacation, I wanted to share a little anecdote that I personally found rather amusing. Last year, I found out that the Bears had a flag that was specific to them, a derivative of the "rainbow flag". Well, this year, I found out that there also exist categories within the "Bears",
and particularly the "Otters". It's a bit like the "Kitty Bears" or maybe, thin and slender "Bears"! How cute is an otter? Maybe there are other categories ? See you soon! Juju, excellent and you had me busting out laughing! Your message is as funny and surprising and comes at the right time to complete, if I may say so, what we just heard from Chris 92.
Yes Juju, there are indeed "otters" as well as many other categories. And Juju, I want you to know that I have checked for you. As a matter of fact, there are many, many of them. I'm not going to tell you about each and every tribe, if I can say that, because it would take way too long. But let's take a look at your question a little bit. Let's start with the "Bear",
I think everyone knows. We're talking here about a middle-aged, chubby and hairy guy. "Otters", on the other hand, would be, unless I'm mistaken, a young guy, skinny and quite hairy as well. Next, if you are young and skinny, not hairy and not muscular, then you are a "Kitty"! Oh yes! On the other hand, if you are beardless and overweight, not to say obese, you are a "Chub". Next, you have also "Wolves",
they are middle-aged guys, muscular and hairy, but not overweight. And so on, with many other variants that are related to age, hairiness, weight and muscle strength, like for example "Pups", or "Chiots" in French, and even the "Bulls", or "Taureaux" in French and so on. And let's not forget the "Daddy"!
And I would even go and add a category, the "Sugar Daddy", which would be very much desired, by young people. Because as one of my cousins would say, "Sugar Daddies" have often a very good character, if you know what I mean! And here's what I was getting at, and I want to thank you, Juju for giving me the opportunity to talk about it, is that once the HappyGayTV.com website,
is fully launched, there will be a blog, where you can read articles, on a wide variety of topics. And so we have already taken note, to write one about it. There you go Juju! Thanks for your interesting intervention, and just as culturally important, as the two previous ones, but in a very different field. Now it's your turn, you who are watching us,
to tell us, if when you're flirting, or when you're looking for true love, do you use these terms on the dating apps. just like Chris 92 mentioned with Richard Mèmeteau's book : "Sex friends, how to how to fail in your love life, in the digital age? Lastly, are all these physical criteria, that allow us to filter our choices on dating apps, an obstacle to finding
the right partner? Or else, isn't it simply: "Just a matter of love", between two people meeting each other, regardless of the physical appearance. So I'm waiting for all your reactions on the Hot-Line, this wonderful tool, this web answering machine, this TV forum that we have put for free available to you to allow you to interact with each other. Just go to the HappyGayTV.com,
and click, on the top menu, and leave us your audio or video message. So go ahead, everyone is waiting for your reactions, your comments, your questions, and see you in the next episode of HappyGayTV & You. And in order to carry on with us on this beautiful journey, sign up for the HappyGayTV Club, so that you won't miss any other
new video of the channel ! There you go, my little ones! See you soon! I love you all Ciao, ciao !
